About the story
Veganism is a lifestyle following the idea that it is "morally wrong" to participate in practices that harm sentient beings. It is a movement with increasing popularity.
Research by Roy Morgan indicates a push towards animal-free diets, where the Australian adult population consuming all or almost all vegetarian diets increased from 9.7% in 2012 to 11.2% in 2016. Further, market researcher Euromonitor International estimated that Australia’s packaged vegan food market would grow from $136 million in 2016 to $215 million by 2020.
Despite this, veganism faces discrimination because vegans are perceived to be “arrogant” toward those who are non-vegan.
Veganism in Australia has received media attention but with little focus on the lived experience of veganism, nor how it exists within the Illawarra. This project takes a qualitative approach to researching veganism through the development of a variety of multimedia stories featuring both vegan and non-vegan people residing in the Illawarra.
A Lot On Your Plate is a multimedia project by University of Wollongong journalism students.
