The Cube of Truth
The Cube of Truth was established in Melbourne in 2016 by animal rights organisation Anonymous for the Voiceless. It is a form of street activism aiming to abolish animal exploitation and the consumption of meat and animal products.
Emily learned of the Cube of Truth after watching a demonstration in Gothenburg while living in Sweden. She followed it back to Pitt Street Mall in Sydney after returning home and established the Illawarra branch in 2017 after discovering Wollongong’s “massive vegan population”.
“I just realised there was a need to bring it to Wollongong,” Emily says. “In Wollongong we have a number of family run dairy and egg farms and people working in slaughter houses. This is where we need to spread [the vegan message]. To get it at the source is really important.”
The masked activists stand back-to-back holding TV screens that show footage of Australian standard practice in slaughter houses, piggeries and dairy and egg farms.
“We show covert footage that was taken by animal liberationists and activists behind the scenes,” Emily explains. “Everything that the public is seeing [on the TV screens] was not meant for display and that’s part of its horror.”
Surrounding the Cube is the ‘outreach’ effort where activists explain the footage to bystanders and promote the vegan lifestyle.
After pairing up with the UOW Vegan Society, Emily describes the Illawarra Cube of Truth and their first on-campus demonstration at the University of Wollongong earlier this year.
