Dylan

I became vegan in April 2016 after I had a vegan week with my girlfriend at the time. I never went back. Before that I was vegetarian for about five or six months because I saw a video of baby male chickens being ground up in a mincer alive. That really affected me and I never ate meat again. I’m vegan because I value the lives of animals more than I value the sensation of eating their dead corpses.

I started participating in activism around June this year directly after, and because, of the Dominion documentary screening at UOW. I found out about the Cube of Truth in 2017 through Matt Stilleno, the Sydney Anonymous for the Voiceless organiser.

Responses to our demonstrations are generally mixed. People often briefly look, then quickly turn away. Others stop and briefly observe, then quickly walk away when they notice someone from the demonstration approaching them. Some people stop, engage in conversation with an outreacher, and have many justifications for their actions; sometimes we get through to these people. We often get many people who are exceptionally easy to convince, and we regularly get vegans telling us that they support us.

Vegan activism makes me feel that I am self-actualising. It makes me feel like I am doing something meaningful, and participating in a meaningful way to something that I really believe in. Every moment is fulfilling.

I think that veganism is becoming more and more accepted socially. I think the social acceptance of veganism is paramount to the propagation of it throughout society and culture. People are often scared to be different, but it is easy to be a black sheep when it is for something that transcends your own life in such a significant way.

Animals are not a commodity. They are not objects and any use of animals WITHOUT their consent is EXPLOITATION. Go vegan!
