Tara
I became vegan a year ago and was vegetarian for six months before that. Originally, it was for health and environmental reasons I learnt about after watching documentaries like What the Health and Cowspiracy.
I started activism about six months ago when I went to watch the Dominion screening premier, which was followed by a powerful march through the city and one of Pitt Street’s biggest Cubes. I’m a member of Legion DX doing protests and going to vigils and I’m a member of the UOW Vegan Society where we’ve done cupcake challenges, organise Dominion screenings and other events. Myself and a few other activists in Wollongong run an activists page on Instagram (VeGong Girls) where we do our own forms of activism and I’m also a member of another Instagram page (eatitwholefoods) that shares recipes and health tips!
In terms of the Cube of Truth, most people are just shocked at what they are seeing for the first time on the screens, leading them to question their morals and engage in discussion. However, we do get people that disagree with out demonstration and may try to argue with us which we don’t encourage.
There are so many vegan options in the Illawarra and it is continuously growing. UOW is one of the most vegan universities in Australia and most restaurants around the area have good vegan options.
I feel empowered standing with so many other people who share the same views and passions as me! It’s increased my confidence and ability to communicate. Some of the best moments have been when outreaching and the person I’m talking to is so genuinely moved and dedicated to taking veganism seriously. It really makes me happy that people do care and are moving towards a more compassionate life.
Becoming an activist was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made! I urge any vegan to get active, whether it’s in a Cube, a protest, or through social media. Share what you know!
